It’s official – we’re moving! At the end of November, MacKenzie, our two cats, and I will all be making the move to Edinburgh, Scotland! These past two+ years in Sweden have quite literally changed our lives and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. We moved to Sweden for the opportunity to live abroad, and were able to pursue so many new and exciting opportunities while living here- it’s been an amazing adventure, and now we’re ready for something new!

The time we have spent in Sweden has brought about some of the most incredible experiences, but it hasn’t always been sunshine and kanelbullar. Put simply: moving to a new country is hard. Learning a new language, understanding a new culture and navigating the job market are all things that take time, energy, and persistence. Finding ways to face these challenges and adapt to a new way of life has been tough, but also so rewarding. I’ve been able to learn so much about myself in the process, and it’s been empowering to see all of the things I’m capable of!

Though we’ve absolutely loved the last two and a half years in beautiful Sweden, Scotland has had a special place in our hearts for some time. In 2015, when MacKenzie and I first started dating, he came to visit me at my university in England. We took an overnight train to Scotland, and spent a beautiful November weekend exploring Edinburgh. We loved the city and joked about moving there in the future – I even posted about it on Instagram! Fast forward to 2020, and we’re just weeks away from that becoming our reality!

So why are we moving now?

Even though we’re in the midst of a pandemic, this move is something that we’ve wanted to do for quite some time. We actually started the process earlier this year, but due to the pandemic, the visa process took much longer to be approved. Combined with all the other details that need to be taken care of when moving abroad, our date for moving to Scotland ended up at the end of November. It’s definitely not the most ideal time to relocate, but we’re really making the best of it! Even though this move is a bit trickier than normal (higher possibility for cancelled planes/trains, quarantines, delayed times for paperwork, being unable to view apartments in person- to name a few!), we’re still so excited and are focusing on all the wonderful things to come!

What will we be doing in Edinburgh?

So what exactly will we be doing in Edinburgh? MacKenzie has accepted an exciting new job, and I’ll continue working from home. And of course in addition to working, we’ll be doing all we can to experience our new city. These are a few of the things we are most excited for:

Hiking and nature – we love hiking and being outdoors. Sweden is quite flat, so we’re excited to see hills and mountains again!

The arts scene – theatre, concerts, arts festivals, these are all things we absolutely love and can’t wait to experience again when things get a bit back to normal.

The historical city – does it get any better than living in a medieval city with a castle smack dab in the middle?

Understanding the language! (kinda) – we won’t need to take language classes, but hopefully we’ll get used to understanding the accents quickly!

The friendly people – we’ve heard lovely things about the Scottish people, and it will be fun to experience a new culture!

As with any big move, there are a million things to plan, friends to say goodbye to, places to visit, and things to pack. We’re trying to enjoy every last minute in Sweden, but are also so excited for everything that is to come!

Thank you for following along on our adventures, it means so much to have your support and to know we have friends and family along on this journey. I’ll continue to write about my experience in Sweden for a bit (I still have so much more to say!), but you can be sure there will be lots of new and fun posts about Scotland to come!

If you’ve been to Edinburgh or have any advice for moving, drop it in the comments below – I would love to hear your thoughts!

An exciting move, Emily. I spent a few months in E while working. One of my favorite memories was while walking the city I came across a theatre which just happened showing a play of ‘ the great potato famine’! I know not as exciting as Moby Dick but it was so fun just to walk in and see live historical theatre at that touring moment!
I will catch up on your Sweden adventure soon. Enjoying, Mary Ann
